World Cup Draw live blogging

Will Charlize Theron put the US in the group of death

We’re going to be live blogging the World Cup Draw today. Keep hitting refresh for updates on the progress on the draw. Coverage on ESPN has begun, but we’re still a ways from the actual balls coming out of the pots. Remember, the United States is in Pot 2, with the other Concacaf teams and the Asian teams plus New Zealand, making it likely that the US will face a difficult first round group.

South African and world hero Nelson Mandela is speaking about the importance for Africa in hosting the World Cup. It really is remarkable how far the country and the continent have come since he was released from prison in 1990. All the African teams will certainly feel an enormous sense of pride in playing on African soil – really want to avoid the tougher African teams like Cote d’Ivoire, Cameroon, and Ghana.

Only in America – Jeremy Schapp reporting from South Africa is “amazed” at the number of reporters covering the draw and the spectacle of the World Cup draw.

As we wait for the draw to begin, lets review the process. The 32 team field is divided into eight, four team pots.

The seeded teams are in Pot 1: South Africa, Brazil, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Argentina, England

The United States is in the second group along with the Asians, New Zealand, and the other Concacaf teams:

Pot 2: Australia, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Honduras, Mexico, USA, New Zealand

The African and remaining unseeded South American teams are in the next pot.

Pot 3: Algeria, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay

And the last pot is the most dangerous, the remaining European teams.

Pot 4: Denmark, France, Greece, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland

Getting closer now…

They’re going through the different pots – which we did just above.

Here we go

First its the seeded teams from Pot 1

Group A: South Africa

Group B: Argentina

Group C: England

Group D: Germany

Group E: Netherlands

Group F: Italy

Group G: Brazil

Group H: Spain

So it goes to Pot 2: WE WANT TO BE THE FIRST BALL OUT OF THE POT

Mexico gets a GIFT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. They’re drawn with South Africa

Group B: Argentina, South Korea

Group C: England and…

USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes – We’ve got ENGLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the opening match – USA gets ENGLAND

Group D: Germany, Australia

Group E: Netherlands, Japan

Group F: Italy, New Zealand – Wow, the Italians get a gift.

I can’t believe the Mexicans get South Africa. Unbelievable.

Group G: Brazil, North Korea

Over-under on the number of Brazilian goals – 8

Charlize Theron is very tall

Group H: Spain, Honduras

That’s not a great draw for the Spanish. Honduras is a good team.

Its on to the African and South American teams. Has to be a South American team.

Group B: Argentina, South Korea, Nigeria

The first two African teams go in Brazil and Argentina pots

Group G: Brazil, North Korea, Cote d’Ivoire

WE GOT ALGERIA – the weakest team in this pot!

Group C: England, USA, Algeria

Mexico is getting the easiest group possible so far. Group A: South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay

Group D: Germany, Australia, Ghana

The US did pretty well out of this pot. Its all going to come down to the European pot.

Group E: Netherlands, Japan, Cameroon

Group F: Italy, New Zealand, Paraguay

Group H: Spain, Honduras, Chile – all Spanish speaking group.

THIS IS HUGE!!!!!!! We have to dodge France and Portugal

They’ll be drawing in order, so the third team out is what we’ve got.

Group A: South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay, and France.

Mexico got screwed there. Finally. Although they might be favorites to go through with the French.

Group B: Argentina, South Korea, Nigeria, and Greece

This is a pretty tough group. USA up next

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Slovenia

Group C: England, USA, Algeria, and Slovenia!!!!!!!!!

Great group. England and no Group of Death.

This is great. We can get through this group.

Group D: Germany, Australia, Ghana, Switzerland

Group E: Netherlands, Japan, Cameroon, and Denmark

Group F: Italy, New Zealand, Paraguay, and Slovakia

Great group for Italy

Group G: Brazil, North Korea, Cote d’Ivoire, and Portugal

Really good group – three real good teams

Group H: Spain, Honduras, Chile, and Switzerland

I made a mistake here Group D: Germany, Australia, Ghana, Switzerland, Serbia

Absolutely phenomenal draw for the United States. Got the weakest unseeded European team, got the weakest team in the African/South American pot, and got England. Can’t really want any more than that.

There are several groups that are pretty event. Group B: Argentina, South Korea, Nigeria, and Greece; Group D: Germany, Australia, Ghana, Switzerland; Group E: Netherlands, Japan, Cameroon, and Denmark. Lots of people will focus on the three heavy hitters in Group G: Brazil, Cote d’Ivoire, and Portugal. If Mexico can get past South Africa in the tournament opener, they should get through.

Fantastic draw for the US.

  1. Bring on the Brits. Forget July 4th… June 12th is our Independence Day. (Charlize, just stop it. Stop.)

  2. So my guess is Group G is the Death Group…although everyone may beat up on N. Korea. Group E may be the best to watch with Cameroon, Denmark and Japan all playing different styles and being relatively equal. The Dutch will have a harder time than most thin.

  3. Charlize’s “wit” was downright brutal.

Get out your teabags, gentlemen, it’s time for the 2nd revolution!!!
