USA Tops Concacaf; But lose Onyewu

We’re just back from RFK. We’ll have mor to say tomorrow, but wanted to post our first reactions. It was a fantastic atmosphere the entire game. Most fans we saw had Charlie Davies in their thoughts – it wasn’t just during the 9th minute. The US got the goal we deserved in stoppage time, and it was enough to earn the top spot in Concacaf because Mexico could only draw against Trinidad.

But we should have won and the draw came at a very high cost as Oguchi Onyewu went down late in the game with a torn patella tendon. The early reports are that he’s out for 3-4 months, and if his recovery goes according to that timetable, he should be back with enough time to get in shape for the World Cup. One advantage he’ll have is that AC Milan’s training facility is second to none. One disadvantage is that he likely won’t get much playing time in the spring, as he’s already struggling to get onto the pitch.

This has been a tough couple of days for the US team and we wish them all the best as the celebrate their deserved place atop Concacaf. Now they have to focus on getting and staying healthy ahead of the World Cup Finals in South Africa next summer.
